Photos: So Many Fires

Debra & Peter Ceravolo have taken some amazing shots of the fires around us.

Debra sent me 2 sets of photos:

So Many Fires – 8/15/15

Here are some photos of the fire that was close to us on the US side on August 13th. They got that one under control, gotta love those firefighters. Peter took the photo of the observatory and the sunset. I took the rest.

The first photo is of the Oliver fires on the 14th. Notice the red Osoyoos Lake.

Stars & Fires – 8/19/15

More on the fascination with fires. I was enjoying the starry sky last night and noticed the constellation Sagittarius, aka the Teapot tipping over the fires in Washington with Oroville in the foreground. The Milky Way appears to be coming out of the teapot’s spout. It looks like smoke but is actually billions of stars and gases in a spiral arm of our own galaxy.

Also here is a photo of the sun with smoke from the Testalinden Creek fire.

A photo of the same fire during the day (Taken by Peter) and a photo of the Testalinden fire last night with Osoyoos in the foreground.

Community Fire Hall Cleanup

On Monday, Aug 17 about 18 residents and members of the Fire Dept. came out for a 2 hour work party at the Fire Hall. Residents weed whacked and pulled tons of weeds and removed them for disposal. The site looks 100% better than it did before. Preparations were made to remove the derelict car that was used for extrication training. It will require getting a tow truck to finish removing it but that will be underway and it will be gone shortly.

Fire Chief Urs Grob asked me to send out a note to thank:

  • Ken Wright
  • Walter Zinowki
  • Rudy Reimer
  • Ethan Reimer
  • Denis Thomson
  • Don Hayward
  • Robin Arnfield
  • Alice & Jack Newton
  • Gloria Richardson
  • David Strohman
  • Wayne Kelly
  • Daryl Baldock
  • Patricia & Mark McKenney
  • Zach Porturica
  • Erwin Berg
  • Annette & Colin Grob

If we have missed anyone it’s my fault. Thanks to all in our community for your support of your community and the Fire Dept.

Mark McKenney, President, AMCS

Wildfires Are Here….Are you ready?

Here’s a note from Denis Thomson and FireSmart reminding us that we should all give a bit of thought to the fires around us and the fact that we may be asked to leave at a moment’s notice.

If you were asked to evacuate, please comment on your experience.  Were you prepared? Did you forget anything? …Patti

Deb and I spent Friday gathering information and making a list of what is missing in our case and not totally understanding our insurances.

The following action plan can be found on our website under the FireSmart tab:  https://anarchistmountaincommunitysociety.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/what-to-do-when.pdf

Also attached is a Fire Evacuation Checklist. Each household needs to design their own based on needs. The internet contains numerous lists based on individual requirements, this is just an example.

Denis & Deb watched a home burn in Washington on Thursday from Caribou.  Here’s a photo from his phone.

Aug 13 – Fire Threatens Anarchist / Sidley

Fire Threatens Anarchist / Sidley

On Thursday, Aug 16th, lightning strikes in the valley between Oroville and the Canadian border started two significant wildfires. The fire spread quickly towards Canada due to high winds. The fire threatened structures in the Nine Mile Place, Caribou, and Raven Hill areas as well as residents in the Sidley area, near Arosa Ranch on Hwy 3.  The Anarchist Mtn Fire Dept. (AMFD) and Provincial Wildfire Management resources worked together on this fire. There were at least 3 helicopters, 2 – 3 provincial fire crews, some bulldozers and all of the AMFD members working this fire. Fire Chief Grob faced this major wildland fire on his second day as our Fire Chief. Urs and the Fire Dept officers led the local operation very effectively, with the Dept. performed admirably. During the fire some firefighting resources were held in reserve at the Fire Hall in case the situation worsened on the mountain. A thank you also goes out to former Fire Chief, Joe Simoes who assisted on-site bringing his own pumper truck to support AMFD.

The Fire Dept. requested that the Community Society use our emergency communications system to call an Alert which later was upgraded to an Evacuation order. It worked well. We have learned some lessons from this first real world use of the system. The ENCOMM committee will assess how the system performed.

Here are a few pictures, from Gerry Pelle a local resident.

Thanks to all those that brought this event to a successful conclusion for our Community.

New Fire Chief – New Beginnings

One of the first projects our new Fire Chief has asked for community support on tidying up around the Fire Hall.  As you know the 28 or so people that are on the fire Dept. put in hundreds of hours of community service each year.

Fire Chief Urs Grob is inviting residents to join Dept members to tidy up around our community Fire Hall, next Monday (Aug 17) beginning at 6 PM. Similar to the work parties that we have held several times at the Summit Centre, we hope you can bring along your “weed whackers”, blowers, rakes, wheel barrows etc. and help us knock down the weeds, blow off the roadways, and generally make the Fire Hall more presentable for the whole community. We figure in a few hours the place will look really ship shape. See you then.
