Open Burning Season Has Begun

Open burning (category 2 and 3) is now permitted and is in effect from October 15, 2023 – April 15, 2024. Residents are required to complete a Burn Authorization application in order to obtain a burn permit (at no cost).

Once you obtain a permit, it is good for the entire burn season (no need to reapply), however, burning authorization (permit) holders must confirm burning is allowed on that day by checking the Air Quality and Venting Index online or by calling 250-490-4125. Please ensure you are only burning permitted materials, that you are following safe burning practices, and that you are following safe burning practices. Anarchist Mountain Fire Chief Grob may suspend any burning at any time should he deem it unsafe or smoke is creating an issue. Category 1 fires are also permitted.

“category 2 open fire” which means an open fire, other than a category 1 campfire, that

  • burns material in one pile not exceeding 2 m in height and 3 m in width,
  • burns material concurrently in 2 piles each not exceeding 2 m in height and 3 m in width, or
  • burns stubble or grass over an area that does not exceed 0.2 ha.

“category 3 open fire” which means an open fire that burns

  • material concurrently in 3 or more piles each not exceeding 2 m in height and 3 m in width,
  • material in one or more piles each exceeding 2 m in height or 3 m in width,
  • one or more windrows, each not exceeding 200 m in length or 15 m in width, or
  • stubble or grass over an area exceeding 0.2 ha.
