Keep vents and pipes clear of snow

Following the large amount of snowfall, Anarchist Mountain Fire Department (AMFD) is reminding residents to ensure their exterior vents and exhaust pipes for the dryer, furnace, stove and fireplace are clear of snow and ice to prevent carbon monoxide (CO) buildup in the home – which can be deadly.

Often referred to as the “silent killer,” CO is an invisible, tasteless and odourless gas that can cause serious illness or death. The poisonous gas is produced when fuels, such as propane, gasoline, natural gas, heating oil or wood, do not burn completely in fuel-burning appliances, such as furnaces, fireplaces, hot water heaters, stoves, barbecues, portable heaters and generators, or vehicles.

Exposure to CO can cause flu-like symptoms, such as headaches, nausea and dizziness, burning eyes, confusion, drowsiness and loss of consciousness. If you or others in your household or building have these symptoms, go outdoors and call 911 immediately. If your CO alarm sounds and no one is suffering from symptoms of CO poisoning, check to see if the battery needs replacing or if the alarm has reached its “end-of-life” before calling 911.

Here are additional CO safety tips and recommendations from the National Fire Protection Association:

  • If you have been exposed to CO, move to a fresh air location outdoors or by an open window or door. Make sure everyone inside the home or building is accounted for. Call for help from a fresh air location and stay there until emergency personnel arrive.
  • If you need to warm a vehicle, remove it from the garage immediately after starting it. Do not run a vehicle or other fueled engine or motor indoors, even if garage doors are open. Make sure the exhaust pipe of a running vehicle is not covered with snow.
  • A generator should be used in a well-ventilated location outdoors away from windows, doors and vent openings.
  • Only use gas or charcoal grills outside.

AGM on Sunday

This Sunday afternoon (Dec.4th) we look forward to seeing you at AMCS’ Annual General Meeting.

You don’t have to be a member to attend, just to vote. However, we value your input as to what you wish to see in 2023 in your community.

Since we have the pandemic restrictions behind us (fingers crossed!), let’s put our heads together to shape what AMCS organizes for the year ahead.

This is also a great opportunity to hear from the AMFD Fire Chief as well as what the Anarchist Mountain Fire Rescue Society has achieved in just its first year.

Learn the differences between the Societies and the Fire Department, as well as the mandate of each.

Most importantly, connect with your neighbours and learn what the community has to offer and where you may want to volunteer. Volunteers are always needed, no matter what amount of time you have to spare!

The first half of the meeting will be as per the AGM Agenda, and the latter half will be refreshments while seeking your engagement.

See you Sunday at AMFD hall – doors open at 1:30 pm for registration and if you wish to pay your 2022 dues. Take advantage of the reduced price of just $15 per family membership!

FireSmart for 11th year

FireSmart™ Canada has informed the AMFRS Wildfire Prevention Program, that we are once again approved as a Recognized FireSmart Neighbourhood!

By working together, residents have demonstrated what can be achieved through the strength of community.

This is the 11th year that Anarchist Mountain has received recognition.

Through the participation in FireSmart activities it increases wildfire resilience. These efforts were especially evident during the Nk’MipWildfire in 2021.

Homeowners can continue to do their part by learning about being FireSmart.

Rebate information is also still available through RDOS.

Many thanks to our local FireSmart team who work so diligently to help us achieve and maintain this status and provide education on wildfire prevention.
